What is hyaluronic acid? What is the role of hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a viscous mucopolysaccharide produced by the body. It is a matrix component or “cement within the cell”. It closely connects the tissues in the body, and at the same time provides structural support for the skin, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Although hyaluronic acid can be found in most cells of the body, it is especially concentrated in skin tissues. In fact, almost 50% of hyaluronic acid is present in the skin, which is distributed in the visible surface and deep layers of the skin.

As we age, the content of hyaluronic acid in our skin naturally declines, usually, 80% of the decline occurs between the age of 40 and 70. The lack of hyaluronic acid can cause skin wrinkles, decreased skin elasticity, and dry skin.

Fortunately, studies have shown that supplementing with 45-200mg of hyaluronic acid per day can increase the level of hyaluronic acid in the skin and at the same time counteract the effect of the decline of hyaluronic acid on the skin by promoting the production of collagen.

Hyaluronic acid improves joint health

Three triple-blind placebo-controlled studies have provided evidence for hyaluronic acid supplement therapy. In the first 8-week study, 20 patients with osteoarthritis were given a daily supplement of 80 mg of hyaluronic acid or 80 mg of placebo treatment.

Compared with the placebo group, patients in the hyaluronic acid group had significantly lower pain scores. In the second 8-week study, 60 patients with osteoarthritis were randomized to receive supplemental treatment with 200 mg hyaluronic acid or 200 mg placebo.

In the treatment group receiving 200 mg of hyaluronic acid, the pain and all related symptoms of the most pain patients showed a significant decrease, but 100 mg of hyaluronic acid supplement therapy did not have such an effect.

The latest study conducted by JR Tokyo General Hospital found that patients with osteoarthritis between 40 and 70 years old can improve symptoms of osteoarthritis by taking 200 mg of Hyabest (a highly purified form of hyaluronic acid) daily for more than 12 months.
